Dorm Cleaning Essentials
Essential Cleaning Supplies to Keep Your Dorm Spotless
Starting university and moving into a dorms is an exciting chapter in every student’s life. Amidst the anticipation of newfound freedom and knowledge, it’s important not to overlook the value of maintaining a clean and organized living space. A tidy dorm room not only promotes a healthier environment but also enhances your overall well-being and productivity. Having all your dorm cleaning essentials ready to go makes it easy to keep your space clean.
I am the first to admit I’m not always the tidiest person but I can’t stand a living space that is actually dirty. At home I had access to all my parents cleaning supplies so I never had to think about getting that for myself. Having limited space in a dorm (and limited budget) I had to figure out what were the absolute essentials to keep on hand.

All-Purpose Cleaner
An all-purpose cleaner is the cornerstone of your cleaning arsenal. It’s versatile and can be used on a variety of surfaces, from countertops to desks, mirrors, and even bathroom fixtures. Look for a cleaner that is effective against dirt, grime, and bacteria. A spray bottle makes for easy use and convenient storage.
Microfiber Cloths
Microfiber cloths are a must-have for any dorm room cleaning routine. These ultra-fine synthetic cloths are highly effective at trapping dust and dirt particles, making them perfect for wiping down surfaces without leaving streaks or residue behind. They are also reusable and environmentally friendly, saving you money in the long run.
Extendable duster
While you can do all your dusting with just a microfibre cloth, I like to have an extendable duster to get the harder to reach places like on top of your dresser.
Broom and Dustpan
A broom and dustpan combo is essential for keeping your floors free from dust, crumbs, and other debris. Choose a compact-sized broom for easy storage in your limited dorm space. Regular sweeping can help prevent allergens from accumulating and maintain a clean and tidy living area.
Disinfecting Wipes
Exam season and flu season always seem to go hand in hand. And there is nothing worse than being sick while you’re trying to study. Disinfecting wipes are convenient for quick and easy surface sanitization. They are especially handy for disinfecting high-touch areas like doorknobs, light switches, and shared appliances. Regular use of disinfecting wipes can help reduce the spread of germs.
Glass Cleaner
Glass cleaner is perfect for keeping your mirrors clean (they can get dirty surprisingly quick). If your dorm room has windows, a glass cleaner is also essential for keeping them clear and allowing more natural light to enter.
Toilet Brush and Cleaner
If your dorm room has an en-suite bathroom, a toilet brush and cleaner are essential. Regular cleaning of the toilet bowl and surrounding areas helps prevent the buildup of stains, odors, and harmful bacteria.
Rubber Gloves
Rubber gloves are not only useful for protecting your hands from cleaning chemicals but also for preventing the spread of germs. They are particularly handy when dealing with messier cleaning tasks or when using harsher cleaning agents.
I have one set for the bathroom and one for the kitchen so I don’t cross contaminate.
Storage basket
all my cleaning supplies go into a little basket that get tucked away. That way everything is all in one place when I need it
In the midst of busy class schedules, social activities, and the excitement of university life, it’s easy for cleaning tasks to fall by the wayside. Hopefully having all these dorm cleaning essentials to hand will help you to keep yours clean with minimal effort.
